Process Description: The SeverStal facility (formerly Ford Rouge Steel) produces cold rolled steel for use in the automotive industry. The steel rolls are processed and sized using a variety of different roll machines, which require extensive lubrication to meet quality and production requirements. The filtration units filter the metal fines from the animal fat based lubrication oils on a continuous basis, and clean oil is then returned to the rolling/sizing machines. In the past a, Flat bed pressure filter would be implemented in this application, however the VPC filter offers a variety of process improvements as it is the next generation of technology. The unit operates at higher pressure, which enables it to produce thicker/drier solids discharge, as well as better filtration. The unit also has a minimum of moving parts, as it does not clam shell open and close, which provides better overall plant hygiene, reduced maintenance costs, and reduced footprint (real estate) in their facility. Presently SeverStal is looking at expanding their filtration requirements, and plans on utilizing this new technology throughout their cold mill |
