Industrial water treatment equipment comes in a variety of implementations, all designed to suit particular operating needs. Filter presses, bed filters, cartridge filters and bag filters all excel in their intended applications. We’ll look at each type of filter and examine what applications it is most appropriate for below.
Where most industrial water treatment equipment is designed to remove solid material from water, filter presses are designed to remove water from the solids. Filter presses are ideal for any filtration application where enough material needs to be removed so that more conventional filtration methods would be ineffective. A filter press operates, as the name implies, by exerting physical pressure usually in the form of either air or a water-filled diaphragm on a slurry mixture and extracting the moisture. The remaining cake of material is then disposed of.
Bed Filters are filters with a bed of material (typically crushed walnut shell, sand, anthracite or activated carbon) that removes contaminants. Material is collected throughout the depth of the bed, allowing large amounts of material to be collected before a backwash cycle is initiated. Inlet water pumps through the filtration medium, which collects and suspends contaminants. Once the medium is saturated with contaminants, a backwash cycle is initiated. The filtration medium is fluidized and washed. This industrial water filtration method cleans the medium and readies the filter for use. This reuse of the filtration medium minimizes waste associated with the process.
Cartridge filters are disposable, replaceable, self-contained filtration units. They consist of a central perforated core wrapped in layers of filtration material. Inlet water is pumped in through the top of the filter core, and passes through the walls of the filter. Contaminants can be caught throught the depth of the filter cartrige, which allows individual cartridges to achieve very high filtration efficiencies. Cartridge filters are typically used where high purity water is required.
Bag filters are similar to cartridge filters in that they are also disposable and replaceable. Bag filters are shaped like a large sock, and are sometimes called sock filters or filter pots. They catch contaminants on the surface of the bag, and are typically used as a low cost option to remove particulate from wastewater streams.
The automatic filter press is a very specialized tool, and it excels at its designed task. Removing moisture from slurry is a difficult but essential part of many industrial processes. There are many ways to accomplish this, but the automatic filter press requires the least maintenance and operator attention of any of the available options.
The Verti-Press automatic filter press offers many benefits over comparable technologies. The largest advantage is in its automation. The entire process from slurry to cake is handled completely automatically, and the results are discharged out to a single location at the end of every cycle (eliminating the need for redundant processing equipment). The fact that the Verti-Press chambers themselves are compact and stacked vertically saves floor space. Each chamber can be isolated for individual operation. One of the most common questions we receive from potential customers relates to the filter sizing process for our filter presses. Excellence Through Testing
We believe that testing is the most important part of the sizing process, which we do prior to the design phase. Properly sizing a filter press is accomplished by testing product slurries using a direct representation of the full scale filter. This simple step has been incredibly useful in eliminating many future problems, including wasteful spending on overly large equipment, as well as production issues associated with undersized equipment.
The first piece of information our team of engineers needs when sizing a filter press is the mass of dry solids in the system. A representative sample is needed to find the dry solid mass in slurry. We first weigh the sample and place it in an oven to dry. When all of the water has evaporated, we reweigh the sample. The difference in masses tells us how much water was in the sample and the ratio of solids to water. Running a filtration test allows us to determine the time a filter will take to run one cycle and the amount of slurry the filter is able to efficiently process.
We believe that testing allows us to plan ahead and deliver the best finished system for our end customer. We have bench scale Verti-Press tower filter presses that are used to size filters for new applications. Cake conditions and cycle times are optimized, so that the correct press size (measured in filtration area) can be implemented. This testing process allows the team to learn all of the wet and dry cake characteristics, and the cake thickness limits prior to production. If needed, cake wash water volumes and cycle times may also be analyzed to prove solids purity. This thorough testing process allows us to achieve excellence and minimize problems that can occur on site.
The bench scale Verti-Press sizes a full scale unit by using a simple equation to scale up. The common formula to do this is:

A_b = area of bench scale filter press (ft3)
t_b = time of test cycle (minutes)

Different types of media may also be investigated in order to find the one most suitable for the job. The best filter belt to use will be tight enough that there is no particulate in the filtrate and will be rugged enough to last for many cycles.
